Columbia archer takes home gold, silver and bronze in varying events
NEW YORK — Columbia archery senior Sachiko Keane earned three podium finishes at the 2022 FISU America Games, which concluded last week in Merida, Mexico.
Keane took home gold in the Mixed Doubles Compound, silver in Women's Team Compound and bronze in Women's Individual Compound. Keane's three medals were the most of any archer representing the United States, which finished third in the final medal count with a total of 66. Her gold in the Mixed Doubles was one of 13 that the United States won at the Games.
"I think she did fantastic," Columbia archery head coach Derek Davis said. "I think the thing I was most impressed with was her qualifying score. It was a little windy and that's something that she has struggled with in her career, so to see her manage it that well was great. She was putting on a clinic in the competition round and just caught a tough break when the wind died on her in the final end. I have the ability to see that and know that it was just bad luck, so overall I was extremely impressed."
Keane set a personal record in the qualifying performance in the individual event, posting a score of 698 out of 720. Her qualifying score was the highest of all United States men's and women's archers.
"This one means a lot because she came into college with the goals of making some of these international collegiate events and COVID has thrown a monkey wrench in that," Davis added. "The FISU Games were supposed to be in 2020 but they got postponed for two years. She's worked hard to make these international teams and circumstances kept interfering, so this meant a lot to her because of the uncertainty of it all.
Keane and the Lions start up the collegiate competition season in late January.
