Sylvie Binder and Sidarth Kumbla take home prestigious Maniatty Awards; Abbey Hsu and Jonathan Suckow win Campbell Performer of the Year Awards; Farida Mohamed and Demirkan Demir are the Rookie of the Year Award winners.
NEW YORK—Six major Columbia Athletics awards along with a variety of other honors were presented to Columbia student-athletes and teams at the 99th edition of the Varsity C Celebration held Tuesday evening at Levien Gymnasium at Dodge Fitness Center.
Taking home the prestigious Connie S. Maniatty Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Awards, given annually to the top senior male and female student-athletes in recognition for their outstanding Columbia careers were senior women's fencer Sylvie Binder and senior men's fencer Sidarth Kumbla. With the honor, Binder becomes the first student-athlete ever to win Columbia's Rookie of the Year, Campbell, and Maniatty Awards.
In its sixth year of existence, the William V. Campbell Performer of the Year was presented to one male and one female student-athlete who demonstrated superior athletic ability during the 2021-22 academic year. This year, the recipients were sophomore women's basketball player Abbey Hsu and junior diver Jonathan Suckow. Suckow won the Campbell Award for the second time (2019).
Two student-athletes were given Rookie of the Year Awards, which go to top student-athletes in their first year of competition with Columbia Athletics. This year's winners were sophomore women's squash competitor Farida Mohamed and first-year men's swimmer Demirkan Demir.
The long-standing watch presentations for the Columbia senior student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade point averages with at least two varsity letters were presented to lacrosse's Rachel Graff, who earned the Marion R. Philips Watch, and men's fencer James Bourtis, who earned the Dwight D. Eisenhower Watch. Named after former U.S. President and Columbia University President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, the award has been presented every year since 1948. Named for Marion R. Philips, who was a major force in founding Barnard's Intercollegiate Athletics Program which served as the foundation for today's Consortium, the women's scholar watch has been awarded every year since 1984.
The lacrosse team earned the Paul E. Fernandes Community Service Award, which is presented to the varsity sports program which achieves the most significant contributions and notable service to the University and local communities during each academic year. The Lions Cup, which honors the most outstanding team on the basis of points in several categories including academic, athletic, personal and social responsibility was given to the men's fencing team. The Karen Blank Award, which honors the top senior female student-athlete enrolled at Barnard College who exemplifies the qualities of academic success, athletic achievement, strong sporting behavior & commitment to community, was given to track and field runner Sofia Camacho.
The event also featured awards for Game of the Year, Top Performance of the Year, and Play of the Year. The winners of these awards were determined by a fan vote. Game of the Year winners were women's basketball's 17-point comeback and 54-51 WNIT win over Boston College (March 24, 2022) and football's 19-0 shutout win at No. 25 Dartmouth on ESPNU (October 22, 2021). Winners of the Top Performance of the Year were men's fencing's Ashton Daniel for his NCAA men's foil title winning performance (March 27, 2022) and softball's Raquel Reyes, who pitched a no-hitter at Brown (April 16, 2022). Winners of the Top Play of the Year were Jonathan Suckow's incredible dive at NCAA Championships (March 26, 2022) and women's soccer's Madi Pilla's golden goal against La Salle (Sept. 8, 2021).
Columbia University Athletics closes each academic year with its annual year-end Varsity C Celebration and awards ceremony. Modeled after the popular ESPYS awards show, the Varsity C Celebration serves as the final gathering of the academic year for all of 800-plus Columbia's student-athletes with the purpose of showcasing their achievements and milestones. In addition to the presentation of several major awards, the evening also featured videos and highlights celebrating major moments and achievements accomplished this year.
Former President of the United States Soccer Federation and Columbia Professor Sunil Gulati served as master of ceremonies for the event.
Planning for this year's celebration was coordinated in conjunction with a Student-Athlete Planning Committee consisting of Diksha Aurobindo, Anabelle Brodeur, Kaitlyn Davis, Alexis Florio, Evan Loesel, Maddy Rifenberick, Maya Walker, and Jennifer Wang.
