BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Columbia women's tennis team wrapped up its trip to Florida with a 5-2 win over Florida Atlantic on Friday. The Lions improve to 6-6 overall as they prepare to start Ivy League play next weekend.
Columbia worked quick to grab the doubles point and take the early lead. The duo of
Sophia Wang and
Anna Zhang posted a 6-3 win over Carla Galmiche and Martina Kudelova in the No. 1 doubles.
Shivani Amineni and
Rachele Rimondini worked together to take a 6-4 win in the No. 2 doubles against Vic. Gomez O'Hayon and Millie-Mae Matthews to secure the doubles point.
Winta Tewolde and
Michelle Xu were defeated in the No. 3 doubles by Katerina Filip and Lexi Silna, 6-1.
Tewolde redeemed herself in singles as she earned the first singles win of the afternoon for the Lions. Tewolde defeated Silna at the No. 3 singles in a 6-2, 6-3 match to put Columbia up, 2-0.
Rimondini battled to take a 6-2, 7-5 win in the No. 4 singles against Gomez O'Hayon.
Clarine Lerby followed that up with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 6 singles against Matthews to clinch the match for the Lions.
After clinching the match win, 4-0, the rest of the singles matches were played out. Zhang notched the fourth singles win for the Lions at the No. 1 spot as she finished off a three-set 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kudelova.
Amineni and
Julia Haynes were defeated in the final two singles matches of the afternoon as Columbia took the 5-2 team win. Amineni lost to Amber McGinnis at the No. 5 spot, 6-7(2-7), 5-7. Haynes dropped a 2-6, 4-6 match to Filip in the No. 2 singles.
UP NEXT
The Lions head to Ithaca, New York next Saturday to open Ivy League action at Cornell. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
