NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team notched its third win in a row to move to 5-5 this season with a dominant 5-0 sweep of Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Tennis Center.
The Lions worked quick to win the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The duo of
Anna Zhang and
Sophia Wang dominated in a 6-0 win over Natalie Aruj and Abby Ackroyd at the No. 1 spot.
Winta Tewolde and
Michelle Xu wrapped up a 6-0 win against Caterina Casadei and Lara Kaplan moments later to secure the doubles point.
Clarine Lerby and
Sophia Strugnell teamed up at the No. 3 spot and led Loren Cuomo and Bridget Martin, 5-1 when the doubles point was clinched.
The Lions rolled through the singles slate to cap off the 5-0 sweep. Sophomore
Carolyn Brodsky posted the first singles win of the afternoon with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Martin at the No. 6 spot. Xu followed with another two-set 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Casadei in the No. 4 singles to put the Lions up, 3-0.
Tewolde clinched the Columbia win as she polished off a 6-1, 6-0 win against Cuomo at the No. 3 spot. Wang and Kaplan proceeded to finish their match as Wang took a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 singles to give Columbia the 5-0 win.
UP NEXT
The Lions head to Florida for a pair of matches next week. Columbia will face No. 50 Florida International on March 13 before traveling to Florida Atlantic on March 17.
