Women’s Tennis Heads to ECAC Championships

Columbia meets Dartmouth in the first round Friday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Columbia women's tennis team is set to compete in the ECAC Championships this weekend. The event will be hosted by Harvard this year and feature an eight-team bracket with all the Ivy League schools.

As the No. 3 seed, Columbia will face 6th-seeded Dartmouth in the first round of the tournament at 2 p.m. Friday. The winner will then meet Brown or Penn on Saturday and the loser will move to the consolation bracket. All teams are guaranteed to play three matches for the weekend.

Columbia enters the weekend 6-1 overall, riding a four-match win streak. The Lions went 3-0 last weekend with a 4-2 win against Kentucky, a 5-2 win over Syracuse and a 4-0 sweep of Wagner. Columbia's win over Kentucky was the first win in program history against a team from the Southeastern Conference.

Columbia's top doubles duo of Anna Zhang and Sophia Wang is 5-2 this spring, which has helped lift the Lions in doubles play. Gayathri Krishnan and Sophia Strugnell have also played well together, posting a perfect 5-0 doubles mark this spring.

In singles, Zhang currently holds a perfect 5-0 mark while primarily playing the No. 2 spot. Zhang has also filled in at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. First-years Krishnan and Natacha Schou have stepped up to play a big role this spring as Krishnan is 4-1 in singles and Schou is 3-1.

In the first invidual ITA rankings of the spring, Julia Haynes was ranked No. 107 in singles. Haynes is 3-1 in singles matches this season in the top spot.

The Lions went 1-2 at the ECAC Championships last season. Columbia opened the tournament with a 4-3 win against Yale before losing to Brown and Harvard in the next two matches.

Columbia will be playing for its first ECAC crown since 2020 when the Lions posted back-to-back ECAC Championships in 2019 and 2020.
