Softball Drops Sunday Doubleheader

Columbia is back in action next weekend to host Princeton

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Columbia softball team closed out its trip to Kentucky with a pair of losses in Sunday's doubleheader. Columbia was defeated by South Dakota State, 9-1 in the first game before dropping a 10-0 contest to No. 23 Kentucky in the second game.
 
South Dakota State Recap
South Dakota State scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. The Jackrabbits used a triple and double to plate the runs.
 
Columbia responded with a run in the top of the second inning to cut the South Dakota State lead in half. Payton Shimansky hit a one-out single to left field before moving to second on a wild pitch. Shimansky then stole third and Maddie Souza was walked. Maddy Rifenberick stepped up next and lined a single through the left side that scored Shimansky.
 
The Jackrabbits answered right back with a run in the bottom of the second to reclaim a two-run advantage. The Jackrabbits then put up a four-spot in the third and a two-spot in the fourth to finish off the 9-1 win in five innings.
 
Sarah Mikami (0-5) suffered the loss after tossing 2.0 innings. Mikami allowed five runs on six hits. Charlotte Laidler and Lily McCord came in as relief. Laidler pitched 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. McCord came in allowed one run on one hit.
 
Kentucky Recap
Kentucky used a two-run home run and a two-RBI double to plate four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Wildcats followed that up with a three-run shot in the second inning to extend the lead to seven runs. Kentucky added two more runs in the third and a run in the fourth to close out a 10-0 victory in five innings.
 
Cami Neal recorded Columbia's only hit of the game with a one-out single in the top of the third inning.
 
Raquel Reyes (3-6) was charged with the loss after giving up 10 runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings in the circle. Laidler came in to close out the fourth inning.
 
ON DECK
Columbia kicks off the Ivy League slate at home next weekend against Princeton. The Lions and Tigers will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m. before playing the series finale Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
