Volleyball Battles, Falls to Big Green in Three

Maynulet records seventh double-double of the year

HANOVER, N.H. – Columbia volleyball pushed Dartmouth in all three sets but fell 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-21) Saturday at Leede Arena.

The Lions had more kills than Dartmouth but were hampered by 26 attack errors. Columbia (2-18, 0-10 Ivy League) saw first-year outside hitter Elena Maynulet record her seventh double-double, posting 10 kills and a match-high 13 digs. Senior Eva Atkins led the Lions with 11 kills. Middle blocker Juliana Williamson added six kills and two blocks off the bench. Setter Ruby van der Heide notched a double-double with 23 assists, 11 digs, and two aces.

Dartmouth (7-13, 4-6 Ivy) hit .231 as a team and was led by Kauany Gutz's match-high 14 kills. Maddie LaFata and Zori Brown added nine and six kills, respectively, in support. The Big Green were active at the net, finishing with eight total blocks. Elle McCreery led the team with five block assists.

Back-to-back kills by Atkins gave Columbia the early lead in the opening set. However, a 6-0 run by the Big Green swung the momentum back in the home team's favor. The Lions traded barbs with Dartmouth, eventually tying the set at 11 on an ace by Maynulet. Late in the frame, a kill by Atkins made it 22-20 in favor of Dartmouth, who put the set away on a kill by Gutz.

Errors plagued the Lions in the second set. Columbia had 13 kills on 49 swings but finished with 10 attack errors. The Big Green hit a match-low .128 in the frame, but was still able to come back late. An ace by Madison Hsieh gave Columbia a 13-5 advantage midway through the frame. The Lions were able to hold on to that lead late, going up 24-21 after Williamson smashed an overpass to get set point for the Lions. Columbia was unable to put the Big Green away, who rode three attack errors late to take the set 27-25.

The third and final set featured seven ties and five lead changes. Atkins led the Lions with five of her 11 kills in the set but was not able to overcome the Big Green's balance, who had four players record two or more kills. Amanda Holsen tied the set up at 19 with a kill, but Brown and Gutz got the Big Green back out front for good.

Columbia returns to action next Friday when it hosts Princeton. Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
