Rookie in contention after rounds of 72 and 76
MELBOURNE, Fla. — First-year Christine Chang posted rounds of even-par 72 and 4-over 76 to lead the Columbia women's golf team through the first day of the Columbia Classic. The two-day, 54-hole event began on Saturday at Duran Golf Club.
Following an opening bogey, Chang birdied the par-4 third and 149-yard par-3 fourth to get to red numbers on the day. She made the turn at 1-under par and birdied the par-5 11th to get to 2-under. Five pars coupled with bogeys at the 12th and 18th helped finish off the second par-or-better round of Chang's rookie year.
Chang posted two more birdies, two bogeys and two doubles in her second round. She shot a 41 on the front nine before bouncing back with a 1-under 35 on the back.
Chang (+4) is tied for 12th out of 71 players on the individual leaderboard. First-year Sarah Shao is tied for 21st following rounds of 74 and 77.
Columbia is ninth on the team leaderboard at 33-over-par for the tournament. The Lions are 10 shots within fifth-place Dartmouth (+23). Illinois State leads the field at 6-over.
