THE CENTER
As its dual varsity and recreational space and located in the heart of Columbia University’s Morningside Heights campus, Dodge Fitness Center functions as the center of Columbia Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education & Recreation activities.
Since 1974, Dodge Fitness Center has served as the competition home for seven of Columbia’s Varsity Sports: men’s basketball, women’s basketball, wrestling, men’s & women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s fencing. The venue also houses athletic department administrative and varsity sports offices, Columbia’s physical education and club sports management center, physical fitness center, pool, indoor running track, squash courts, locker rooms, and dry sauna. In addition, the facility serves as host for a variety of other Columbia University events.
Each year, Dodge Fitness Center hosts over one million visitors. At peak activity, between 4,000 and 6,000 people per day use Dodge Fitness Center, whether to participate in a fitness activity, compete in a club sport and/or attend an athletic event. Each semester, over 1,500 students attend classes in Dodge.
In 1995, Dodge Fitness Center received major renovation which expanded its existing space. As part of the renovation, Columbia reconstructed and renovated University Gym, retreated the basketball court with synthetic coating and expanded the three floors of fitness space.
Named for Marcellus Hartley Dodge, a businessman who served as Chairman of the Board of Remington Arms Company and as a member of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, member of the Columbia board of trustees from 1907-1959, President of the YMCA in the United States and well-known philanthropist. Dodge graduated from Columbia University in 1903 where he served as president of his class, manager of the track and field team and coxswain of the crew team. Upon his graduation, he presented Hartley Hall, the largest dormitory on the Columbia campus. He also donated the fountains on the Low Memorial Library plaza. In addition, the Marcellus Hartley Dodge Cup, awarded in rowing, is named in his honor. After his death in 1963, his family and estate underwrote the construction of Dodge Physical Fitness Center and the university renamed another of its buildings Dodge Hall in his honor.
