When discussing the greatest players in Columbia field hockey history, Christina Freibott's name sits at the top. A gifted playmaker and relentless competitor, Freibott redefined what was possible for the program during her four-year career from 2012-15, leaving Morningside Heights as Columbia's all-time leader in career points (99), second in assists (45), and tied for fifth in school history with 27 goals.
Freibott was the catalyst behind one of the most successful eras in Columbia field hockey history. As a junior in 2014, the Wilmington, Delaware, native authored one of the finest individual seasons ever by a Lion, setting single-season program records with 41 points and 21 assists while leading the nation in assists per game. Her remarkable campaign earned unanimous Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year honors, First Team All-Ivy League recognition, First Team All-Mideast Region accolades and Third Team NFHCA All-America honors, making her the program's first All-American in seven years.
She followed that performance with another exceptional senior season, recording 11 goals and 13 assists while serving as team captain. Freibott finished among the nation's leaders in both assists and points per game, earning First Team All-Ivy League and First Team All-Mideast Region honors for a second consecutive year. She concluded her career as a three-time All-Ivy League selection, three-time All-Region honoree and four-time NFHCA National Academic Squad member, combining elite performance on the field with excellence in the classroom.
From the moment she arrived on campus, Freibott established herself as one of the Ivy League's premier offensive threats. She earned All-Ivy League recognition in three consecutive seasons and steadily climbed Columbia's career record lists through her ability to both score and distribute. Her versatility made her one of the nation's most complete midfielders, able to dictate the pace of play while creating scoring opportunities for teammates and finishing chances herself. By the conclusion of her career, she had become the standard by which future Columbia attackers would be measured.
Freibott's impact extended well beyond the record book. She started all 68 games of her collegiate career and consistently delivered in the biggest moments, recording five game-winning goals while orchestrating one of the most dynamic offenses Columbia has ever produced. Whether creating opportunities for teammates or finishing chances herself, she possessed a rare combination of vision, creativity and poise that transformed the Lions into one of the Ivy League's premier attacking teams.
Her legacy is reflected not only in the records she set, but in the expectations she established for those who followed. Through her elite production, unwavering consistency and leadership, Freibott helped elevate Columbia field hockey on the conference and national stage. Her extraordinary career, distinguished by record-setting performances, national recognition and a lasting impact on the program, firmly established her as one of the greatest student-athletes in Columbia field hockey history.
