When discussing the greatest players in Columbia women's golf history, Michelle Piyapattra's name sits right at the top. A phenom from the moment she arrived on Morningside Heights, Piyapattra redefined what was possible for the program during her storied four-year career from 2010-14, graduating with her name etched throughout the record book.
In her first Ivy League Championship in 2011, the Corona, California, native authored one of the most dominant performances in Ivy League history. She claimed the individual championship by a staggering 10-stroke margin, firing a final-round 69 to become just the second Lion ever to capture the conference crown. To date, her 2-under-par 214 remains the second-lowest 54-hole total in Ivy League Women’s Golf Championship history. That triumph capped a remarkable debut campaign featuring three individual victories and First Team All-Ivy League recognition.
She elevated her game even further as a sophomore, putting together one of the finest seasons the Ivy League had ever seen. Piyapattra led the conference with a 74.73 stroke average, racked up seven top-five finishes, and secured two more individual titles. Her brilliance earned her 2011–12 Ivy League Player of the Year honors – a first for the program – and a selection to the NCAA Regionals, making her Columbia's first individual NCAA qualifier.
From her opening drive to her final putt, Piyapattra established an unprecedented standard of consistency. She earned First Team All-Ivy League honors three times and was named the program's William Terminello MVP in all four of her collegiate seasons. Over the course of her career, she amassed a school-record six individual titles, while repeatedly leading the Lions to historic team finishes. She capped off her collegiate tenure by receiving the prestigious Connie S. Maniatty Award as Columbia’s most outstanding senior female student-athlete.
Piyapattra's mark on the program is cemented by records that still stand today as benchmarks of collegiate brilliance. Across 89 career rounds, she posted a program-record 75.51 scoring average (+3.78 vs. Par) and recorded 16 par-or-better rounds. In the 2012-13 season, she set Columbia's lowest single-round mark by firing an incredible 7-under 65 at the Nittany Lion Invitational. Nationally, her dominance was equally clear, highlighted by reaching a program-best national ranking of No. 105 during the 2011-12 season.
Piyapattra's impact extended far beyond individual trophies. Whether setting single-round records or showcasing unwavering poise across the country's most challenging courses, she possessed a rare blend of ball-striking precision, composure, and fierce competitive drive.
Her legacy is cemented not only in the record books she rewrote, but in the precedent of excellence she set for future generations of Lion golfers. Through her record-breaking victories, conference-wide dominance, and national accomplishments, Piyapattra firmly established herself as a legend of Columbia women's golf.
