Few student-athletes have had a greater impact on the trajectory of Columbia women's rowing than Samantha Warren '13CC, whose remarkable career helped elevate the Lions to new heights while laying the foundation for the program's sustained success.
A native of Sacramento, California, Warren emerged as one of the finest rowers in program history during her four-year career from 2009-13. A fixture in the varsity eight lineup, she combined elite athletic ability with exceptional leadership, serving as a two-time team captain and becoming the standard by which future Columbia rowers would be measured.
Warren's senior season in 2012-13 remains one of the most accomplished individual campaigns in Columbia rowing history. Rowing in the No. 6 seat of the varsity eight, she helped guide the Lions to a program-record No. 15 national ranking while leading Columbia to several historic victories. The varsity eight earned landmark wins over Yale in the Connell Cup and Brown in the Dunn Bowl, which were both firsts in program history. The Lions then captured the Eastern Sprints championship, one of the most significant achievements the program had ever attained. The Lions also claimed the Woodbury Cup and established themselves among the nation's elite crews.
Her excellence extended well beyond a single season. Warren earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) First Team All-America honors as a senior after receiving Second Team All-America recognition the previous year. She also collected First Team All-Region honors twice and was a three-time All-Mid Atlantic Regional selection, consistently ranking among the country's top collegiate rowers.
Warren's leadership was equally impactful. She received Columbia's prestigious Ed Hewitt Award, presented for outstanding leadership, along with the Women's Crew Award as the team's most outstanding rower. Those honors reflected not only her accomplishments on the water but also the example she set for her teammates through dedication, resilience and competitive excellence.
On the international stage, Warren proudly represented the United States as a member of the 2009 Junior National Team before earning spots on the U23 National Team in both 2012 and 2013. Following graduation, she trained full-time at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Princeton, winning the 2014 Fall Speed Order and placing second in the women's openweight double at the 2015 National Selection Regatta.
Warren returned to Morningside Heights in 2016 as a member of Columbia's coaching staff, continuing to shape the program she helped transform as a student-athlete. Rising to associate head coach, she has played an instrumental role in one of the most successful eras in school history, including Columbia's first-ever NCAA Championship team appearance in 2026. Her continued commitment to developing student-athletes has extended the legacy she established in blue and white more than a decade earlier.
As both an All-American competitor and championship-caliber coach, Warren's influence on Columbia rowing spans generations. Her career embodies the excellence, leadership and lasting impact that define a Columbia Athletics Hall of Famer.
