Goswami held an extended discussion with his team shortly after the conclusion of Friday's 7-0 win over Binghamton, and reminded them of the Cadets' stunner. The Lion players listened intently, and played intensely Saturday to defeat Army, 6-1.
“We played pretty well,” Goswami said. “It helped that their courts weren't as fast; they had been resurfaced.
Columbia swept all three doubles matches and five of six singles contests, losing only at second singles, where Mark Clemente was upset by Michael Good. Junior Jared Drucker got the team off to a good start when he moved up to No. 1 singles and beat John Houghton, 6-2, 7-5.
The other Lions followed his lead, all winning in just two sets each. Good defeated Clemente, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, a match much closer than the score indicates. “Michael Good served out of his mind,” Goswami noted.
The coach was particularly pleased with senior Paul Ratchford, who had been slumping.
“Paul really played well,” the coach said. “He's coming back. You can tell.”
Ratchford overwhelmed Eddie Kang in their singles match, 6-0, 6-2, and handled the move up to first doubles in stride when he and Marty Moore beat Houghton and Good, 8-6.
Goswami leaned back and smiled. “This was a good win,” he said. “With one exception, these are the same guys who beat us two years ago.”
Columbia returns to the Dick Savitt Tennis Center next Friday to meet Virginia's Radford University as part of a men's-women's doubleheader. The men's match begins at 12 noon, followed at 3:30 by the Lion women, making their 2007 home debut against Maryland-Baltimore County.
