Sugimoto, Luitjen and Rubin Head Columbia?s Honorees in All-Ivy League Fencing
3/9/2007 9:00:00 PM | Fencing
Six Columbia women made first team All-Ivy League, as did five men. Two other men's fencers are on second team All-Ivy League.
The large numbers are indicative of Columbia's success this season. The women's team went 13-0 overall, 6-0 in the Ivy League to win its first Ivy League title since 2003. The men's team tied for first in the league with Harvard, both with 4-1 records, and was 11-2 overall. It was the sixth Ivy title Columbia had won or shared in the past seven years.
Unlike many Ivy League sports in which All-Ivy League teams are chosen by voting among that sport's head coaches, fencing All-Ivy League is determined solely by Ivy League head-to-head league competition (winning percentage), provided fencers participate in 75% of their team's league matches.
Sugimoto had an 11-4 record and .733 winning percentage in men's foil during the 2007 Ivy League Championships, tying him with teammate Kurt Getz and Harvard's Enoch Woodhouse. Ron Berkowsky of Penn led all men's foilists with a 14-1 record. Sugimoto, a senior from Pacific Palisades, Calif., was 30-9 overall this season, 98-39 for his career in dual meets.
Luitjen, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, and Rubin, a senior from Los Angeles, also made first team All-Ivy League in each of their three varsity seasons. Neither fenced during the 2005-06 season.
Joining the two women on first team All-Ivy League this year were senior Kathleen Reckling (foil), juniors Dani Gordet and Emily Jacobson, both sabre, and sophomore Daria Schneider, also sabre.
In addition to Sugimoto, men's first-team honorees included senior James Williams (sabre), sophomore Dwight Smith (epee), and first-years Kurt Getz (foil) and Brent Kelly (epee). Two other sabre fencers, senior Alex Krul and first-year Jeff Spear, were second team All-Ivy League.
