NEW YORK ? Assistant wrestling coach Matt Valenti will return to the mat for his first competition since defeating Coleman Scott for the national title in 2007.
Valenti will compete this weekend at the Guru Hargobind International Wrestling Championships in Surrey, British Columbia. The two-time national champion will be wrestling at 60kg (132lbs) as part of the New York Athletic Club.
The tournament, which takes place on November 7 and 8 at the Guildford Recreation Center, is considered one of the top international wrestling competitions. This year's tournament features 12 competitors who represented their respective countries at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, including Yogeshwar Dutt from India, who will also be competing at 60 kg.
"This is a great opportunity for Matt to kick off his international career by competing at the Guru Hargobind International Wrestling Championships,” noted Brendan Buckley, the Andrew F. Bath Head Coach of Wrestling.
“Matt's goal is to make the 2012 Olympic team and to not only compete there but to win a gold medal. The 60 kilogram weight class is perfect for him and his style is one that will become very successful on the freestyle scene. It is a great opportunity for our program as well as for our wrestlers to have someone of Matt's caliber on our coaching staff."
