
John Barrett Named Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Sports Programs

NEW YORK ? Columbia has named John Barrett Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Sport Programs, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, announced.
For the last two years, Barrett has served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Business Management at Brown University. In this position, he supervised a number of varsity sports programs, as well as the department's athletic equipment services.
“I am thrilled to welcome John to the Columbia family,” Murphy said. “He has an outstanding combination of experience, Ivy League knowledge and leadership from his extensive work with Brown University.”
While at Brown, Barrett developed, reported and maintained the athletics department's budget and served as the direct liaison to Brown University's athletics fundraising organization, the Brown Sports Foundation. Barrett has worked closely with NCAA business offices, University controllers and purchasing offices and outside vendors.
Barrett joined the Bears' staff in 2001 as the Assistant Athletic Business Manager and Travel Coordinator. Three years later he was promoted to Athletic Business Manager until July of 2006 when he was named Assistant Athletic Director.
No stranger to New York City, Barrett earned his B.A. from Fordham University in Communication and Media Studies in 1999. After graduation, Barrett worked for Fordham Athletics in their business and compliance offices before leaving for Brown in 2001. In addition, he also possesses a Master's Degree in Sport Management from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“John's experience and professionalism make him an obvious choice for the position,” Murphy added. “He will be a wonderful addition to our staff.”
