NEW YORK – One of the nation's top fencing programs has its schedule set for the upcoming season, looking to build on a history that includes 13 NCAA team championships, 32 individual NCAA championships and 41 Ivy League championships.
Columbia will be in action the weekend of November 20-21. On Nov. 20, the Lions will meet Princeton and NYU in a 45-touch relay scrimmage in the Blue Gym on the Columbia campus. A day later, Nov. 21, is Columbia's annual alumni meet in the Columbia Fencing Room.
Lion fencers will then compete in the San Jose North American Cup, taking place from January 15-18. The following weekend, Columbia will take on the some of the nation's best in a pair of multi-team meets.
On Jan. 23, Columbia's men and women will square off against Notre Dame, St. John's, Ohio State and Wayne State. The men's squad will also face Stevens Tech, while the women's team will face Northwestern in addition to the four aforementioned opponents.
A day later, at St. John's, Columbia will meet the host Red Storm, along with the top three finishers at last year's NCAA Championships - Ohio State, Notre Dame and Penn State, last year's NCAA champion. Columbia finished fourth at the 2009 Championships.
Columbia's homecoming meet will be on February 3 in the Blue Gym with NYU, Sacred Heart and Vassar making the trip to Morningside Heights. After that meet, the Lions' primary focus will move to the Ivy League Championships.
In a different format than previous years, the two-part Ivy League Championships will take place on consecutive weekends this year. In the recent past, the round-robin tournament had been separated by two weekends. This year, the first part will take place at Cornell on Feb. 21, followed by the conclusion at Penn on Feb. 28.
The NCAA Northeast Regionals will be held on March 14 at Brown, and the NCAA Championships are slated for March 25-28.
