
Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Northeast Regional

NEW YORK – The Columbia men's tennis team took part in the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2011 Men's Northeast Regional, October 11-18th, in Ithaca, N.Y. The Lions had strong performances across the board.
In doubles, Columbia had two pairs advance to the quarterfinal rounds before falling. The first-year duo or Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur won their round of 64 match against a duo from Drexel, 8-3, advancing to take on the No.9 seeds, Blumenkrancz and Samaha from Yale. Schnur and Narayana defeated them, 9-8(6), notching the upset to advance to the round of 16. There, they beat the No.1 seeds, Sam Fife and Will Spector from Brown, 8-6, to continue on to the quarterfinals. Finally, the duo fell, as Bornkessel and Devos from Binghamton defeated them, 8-4.
First-year Winston Lin and senior Haig Schneiderman also paired up to head to the quarterfinals, where they lost to the eventual champions. Schneiderman and Lin opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Buffalo, and followed that up with an 8-4 win over Fleck and Luu from Cornell. In the Round of 16, they took on Iosh and Jang-Milsten from Army, beating them 8-2. In the quarterfinals, Lin and Schneiderman fell to Princeton's Matt Siow and Matt Spindler, 9-7, who went on to win the bracket.
In singles, Columbia had five athletes competing, including No.11 seed Schneiderman, and junior Nathaniel Gery, who advanced to the round of 16. Gery had the most success for the Lions in singles, as he won three of his matches. In the round of 128, Gery defeated Cornell's Jason Luu 7-6(5), 6-2, advancing to take on No.10 seed John Huang from Yale. Gery came out on top, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5). The round of 32 had Gery face off against Ismael Dinia of Binghamton, whom he beat 6-2, 6-3. It wasn't until the round of 16 that Gery would fall, as he lost to the No.4 seed, Xander Centenari of Dartmouth, 6-4, 6-4.
Schneiderman was the top Lion in the bracket, as he had a No.11 seed coming into the tournament. After a first-round bye, Schneiderman notched a win over Harvard's Casey Mcmaster, 6-2, 6-1, before falling to Dartmouth's Cameron Ghorbani, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 32. First-year Narayana suffered a loss in the first round to Marist's Joris Van Eck, 6-2, 6-4, while sophomore Tizian Bucher lost to Penn's Nikola Kocovic, 6-4, 6-3. First-year Lin rounded out the singles participants as the No.16 seed. He had a firs-round bye, and advanced to take on Marist's Will Reznek, whom he beat 7-5, 6-2, before falling to No.12 seed Venkat Iyer of Cornell, 7-6(5), 6-0.
Up next for the Lions is the ITA/USTA National Indoors Championships, which will take place in Flushing Meadows, Thursday, November 3 to Sunday, November 6.
