90th Annual Varsity C Celebration Honors Columbia's Student-Athletes
5/4/2011 7:55:00 PM | General
NEW YORK – Seniors Jacqueline Drouin of women's cross country/track and field and Clark Granum of men's golf were each presented the Connie S. Maniatty Outstanding Senior Student-athlete Award, to highlight the 90th edition of the Varsity C Celebration: Saluting our Student-athletes at Levien Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
Granum finished his stellar career as the only Lion in school history to be named All-Ivy League in all four of their seasons. A GCAA All-American scholar, Granum finished third as a first-year at the Ivy League Championship to help Columbia to its first league title since 1999. The Lions would go on to win three straight Ivy League championships, with Granum playing a pivotal role in all of them. As a junior, the San Diego native fired a final-round 67 to help his team to a three-peat, and tied for the individual title through 54 holes. Over his career Granum played a school-record 102 rounds, with 99 of those used toward the team score.
The event, which honors all Columbia student-athletes, also featured the presentation of the Athletics Alumni Awards to Don Jackson '73CC (football and baseball) and Helen Doyle Yeager '85BC (women's basketball), and the watch award presentations for the Columbia senior student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade-point averages and at least two varsity letters. Kathleen Barry (women's basketball) earned the Marion R. Philips Watch, while Nick Standish (wrestling) earned the Dwight D. Eisenhower watch.
In addition, the third-annual Lions Cup was awarded to the football team. A competitive event for all Columbia University varsity sports programs that is a means by which student-athletes can compete on behalf of their teams for points in various categories, the football team accumulated 4,960 points to narrowly edge men's soccer by 200 points.
The women's squash team, in its first year as a varsity sport program at Columbia, was awarded the Paul E. Fernandes Community Service Award, given to the varsity sports program achieving the most significant contributions and notable service to the University and local communities during an academic year.
