PITTSBURGH - Junior Steve Santos recorded two pins and a win by technical fall en route to a 4-0 performance and the Columbia wrestling team went 3-1 at the Pitt Duals on Saturday. Host No. 10 Pittsburgh defeated Columbia, 25-12, to open the day, but the Lions bounced back with a 49-0 win over Davidson, a 46-3 victory over VMI and a 30-12 win over Eastern Michigan.
“Overall, it was definitely a good day,” Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Carl Fronhofer said. “It was a nice win over Eastern Michigan. They are a pretty solid team and they had some good wins this year, including one over Michigan State. They are definitely a team that is competing at a high level and we took it to them pretty good. That was a win we really wanted to get.”
Santos (12-5) was the most dominant wrestler at 149 pounds on Saturday in Fitzgerald Field House. He started the day with an 8-2 win over Pittsburgh's Josh Pascazi, giving Columbia its first points against the Panthers. Against Davidson, Santos pinned Scott Ray in 3:34 as the Lions shutout the Wildcats. He followed that with a pin against VMI's David Yost in 1:34 and a 19-4 technical fall over Eastern Michigan's Jaylyn Bohl.
Senior captain Kyle Gilchrist (17-7) also wrestled well at 133, going 3-1 for the day with three major-decision wins. Gilchrist went toe-to-toe with Pitt's Shelton Mack before coming up short in a 6-4 decision. He was dominant the rest of the day with a 10-2 major decision over Davidson's Anthony Elias, a 10-2 major decision over VMI's Ryan Goodsell and a 13-3 major decision over Eastern Michigan's Andrew Novak.
Senior Eren Civan (6-3) was 3-1 on the day with two pins and one major decision. Pitt's Tyler Wilps edged Civan, 4-3, in morning. Civan followed that with a 16-6 major decision over Davidson's Tyler Mullen, a 1:20 pin against VMI's Mike Burnett and a 55-second pin against Eastern Michigan's Lester France.
First-year Shane Hughes (11-6) was 3-0 at 184. Hughes pinned Davidson's Ike Crews in 1:55, took a victory due to injury to VMI's Conor Black and claimed a 7-2 decision over Eastern Michigan's Khodor Hoballah.
At heavyweight, senior captain Kevin Lester (17-7) was 3-0 on the day. Lester pinned Pitt's Joel Yahner and took a forfeit victory against Davidson. Lester closed the day with an 8-4 win over Eastern Michigan's Wes Schroeder.
At 174, junior Stephen West (18-8) was 2-1 in three bouts to extend his team-high wins to 18. After losing to Pitt's Ethan Headlee, 2-0, West bounced back with a 2:46 pin over Davidson's Ian Solcz and a 10-6 decision over Eastern Michigan's Phillip Joseph.
Sophomore 141-pounder Matt Bystol (14-9) won both of his bouts, taking an 18-12 decision over Davidson's Kevin Birmingham and a 6-3 win over VMI's Zeb Stewart.
No. 20 Jake O'Hara (16-8) went 2-1 in his three bouts at 157. O'Hara started strong with a 10-4 win over Pitt's Donnie Tasser and followed that with a 19-4 technical fall victory over Davidson's CT Talevi. After teammate Shane Strumwasser (6-6) claimed a 3-1 in over VMI's Mike Burnett, O'Hara returned in the Lions' dual against Eastern Michigan where he came up short in a 3-1 decision against Aaron Sulzer.
At 197, first-year Matt Idelson (4-4) was pinned by Pitt's Matt Wilps in his first bout, but bounced back with a 3:47 pin over Ed Isola and a 3:32 pin over VMI's John Dommert.
Fronhofer was proud of the way the team came back strong after its initial loss to Pitt
“Against Pitt, we were in a lot of close individual bouts and we just didn't win the tight bouts,” he said. “If you want to beat a top-10 dual team, you have to win the close matches. We bounced back and wrestled really well in three matches and got three W's.”
The Lions will make their home debut against on Jan. 14 at University Gymnasium. The dual is slated to start at 7 p.m.
