A two-time captain of Columbia's wrestling program, Steven Hasenfus was named the Ivy League Wrestler of the Year in 1989 after garnering first-team All-Ivy League honors in 1987 and 1988.  During his senior year, he defeated each of the six Ivy League opponents he went up against on the mat.  He was the first, and is to this day one of only two, Columbia wrestlers to be honored with the Ivy League's top honor. 

The three-time All-East selection, Hasenfus world compile an overall record of 91-17-1 in a Columbia uniform.  His exceptional senior year built on a career of success since his first-year campaign.  In his first year with the Lions, Hasenfus garnered a 7-3-1 mark and placed a third at the New York State Championships.

From sophomore year through graduation, he went undefeated in Ivy League matches.  Wrestling at 190 lbs. as a junior, he posted an undefeated 17-0 dual meet record on his way to capturing the New York State Championships.  It would be the first of his two state titles, winning the Championship again as a senior.

The New York State Championship was one of the numerous accomplishments that made the 1988-89 season as exceptional success for the Duxbury, Massachusetts native.  Competing at 177 lbs. Hasenfus went 9-1 in dual meet matches and wrestled his way to the Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association Championship, becoming the first Columbia student-athlete to win since Henry O'Shaughnessy in 1947.  His victory in the EIWA Championships came just one year after his runner-up showing in 1988.

The 1989 season culminated with a trip to the NCAA tournament for Hasenfus, where he reached the quarterfinals.  Hasenfus finished his senior year with a 31-4 overall record.
