
Wrestling Falls To Lehigh In Dual Action

NEW YORK - The Columbia wrestling team battled, but ultimately fell to Lehigh in the first dual-meet of the season in front of a packed house at the New York Athletic Club. Markus Scheidel earned the lone match victory for the Lions, as the Mountain Hawks came out on top, 34-3.
125 - In the first match of the day, Johnson Mai fell to Scott Parker of Lehigh at the 1:52 mark in the first period.
133 - Angelo Amenta had a tough battle with Mason Breckman of Lehigh, who has been ranked in the top five of several preseason polls. The two grapplers felt each other out in the first period, ending the frame scoreless. Breckman was able to grab two points in the second period, taking a lead into the third. Amenta earned an escape point in the final frame, but ultimately fell, 4-1.
141 - First-year Jacob Macalolooy came out aggressive against Randy Cruz, but it would not be enough as Cruz topped the Columbia first-year, 14-1.
149 - Connor Sutton trailed 3-0 after two rounds, and battled back against Lehigh's Drew Longo. The first-year for the Mountain Hawks ultimately topped Sutton, 8-2.
157 - Scheidel looked to be in control throughout a closely contested match, earning the lone Lion win, 6-4. The sophomore improved to 5-1 on the season with the win.
165 - First-year Tyrel White hung with a fifth-year senior in Santiago Martinez throughout the entire match. In the third, Martinez earned a late escape and added a point in riding time to win, 5-3.
174 - Senior tri-captain Shane Hughes was out-lasted by Marshall Peppelman of Lehigh, dropping a 7-2 decision.
184 - Zack Hernandez of Columbia and Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh went back-and-forth in the first two rounds, going in to the final period in a scoreless tie. Brown scored three points in the final period and added a point on riding time to knock off Hernandez, 4-1.
197 - John Bolich of Lehigh got to work, and forced a fall of Matt Idelson 55 seconds in to the first period.
285 - First-year Garrett Ryan went down to the wire with Doug Vollaro in the final match of the dual. Vollaro took a 4-3 lead into the third period, and was able to surpass Ryan, 6-3.
The Lions have a great chance to bounce back this Sunday, when Columbia heads to the New York State Championships, hosted by Cornell.
