
Lin Picks Up Consolation Win at 2014 USTA/ITA NIIC

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Winston Lin of the Columbia men's tennis team found his way into the win column at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Friday.
After having this chances at the championship crown stopped on the first day of competition, the eighth-ranked player in the nation came back with a vengeance on day two. Lin, a senior, faced off against Denver's Henry Craig in the singles back draw. Games fell on either side of the net as the first set sat tied 2-2, before Lin won four straight games to seal a 6-2 first set win. In the second stanza, the Williamsville, New York, local fell behind 3-0, before coming back for a 6-4 victory to take the match.
Also in the singles consolation for Columbia was Lin's classmate Ashok Narayana. The 108th-ranked player was on the other side of the court of South Florida's Roberto Cid. The score flip-flopped in the first, but it was Cid who earned the win, 7-5. Cid carried his first set momentum into the second and took the match, 6-2.
In doubles, Narayana was scheduled to take the consolation court with his classmate and partner Max Schnur versus TCU's Trevor Johnson and Cameron Norrie. The Columbia pair earned a walkover victory.
Richard Pham and Mike Vermeer round out the Lions competitors at the events as the duo competed in the consolation doubles against Ohio State's Kevin Metka andRalf Steinbach. Following a 7-5 first set in favor of the Buckeyes, the Lions forced the second set to go to tiebreak. In the extra sets Ohio State's team prevailed 7-6(2).
