EVANSTON, Ill. - The first session of one of the biggest collegiate wrestling tournaments of the year has come to an end, and the Columbia wrestling team still has seven competitors alive at the Midlands Championships.
Angelo Amenta (133) and Garrett Ryan (HWT) lead the way so far, having both won two matches. Amenta dropped his first match of the day, but came back to earn an 11-0 win over Elliot Henderson of Chicago, before besting Paddy Quinian of Franklin & Marshall, 4-1. Ryan is still alive in the championship division, having topped Brooks Black of Illinois, 3-1, and taking down Jake Henderson of Old Dominion, 5-3.
The second session will begin at 8 p.m. est., and the rest of the tournament will wrap up tomorrow.
125 - Johnson Mai, 0-1, will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight. Penn Gottfried, 0-2, eliminated.
133 - Angelo Amenta, 2-1, will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight.
141 - Jacob Macalolooy, 1-2, eliminated. Ryan Ponte, 0-2, eliminated.
149 - Tyler Ponte, 1-1, will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight. Connor Sutton, 1-2, eliminated.
165 - Tyrel White, 2-1, will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight.
174 - Shane Hughes, 1-1, will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight.
184 - Zack Hernandez, 0-1, will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight.
197 - Troy Hembury, 1-2, eliminated. Matt Idelson, 0-2, eliminated.
285 - Garrett Ryan, 2-0, will compete in the championship division tonight.
