White and Ryan Advance To Second Day At Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - Two Columbia first-years will continue on at the Midlands Championships, as Tyrel White and Garrett Ryan had successful outings in the first day of the event.
After dropping his first match, White went on a roll in the 165 pound bracket. In his second match, the North Bomoseen, Vermont, native earned a major decision over Justin Samora of Adams State, then beat Austin Geerlings of Eastern Michigan, 13-7, to advance to the night session.
White earned two tough victories in his primetime matches, knocking off Virginia Tech's Chad Straube, 7-5, before a late third round takedown propelled him over Emery Parker of Illinois, 5-4. White's first match tomorrow will come against Adam Fierro of Cal State Bakersfield.
For Ryan, two straight victories in the morning session sent him into a quarterfinal match with Bobby Telford of Iowa. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native was unable to get by the two-time All-American for the Hawkeyes, but will look to improve on his 2-1 record tomorrow, when he starts the day against Brock Horwath of Wisconsin.
Other highlights for the Lions included Tyler Ponte going 2-2, including a victory by fall over Kyle Langdenderfer of Illinois, and Shane Hughes picking up two wins, including a major decision over Bryce Gorman of Northern Illinois.
After one day of action, Iowa leads the way with 110.5 points, followed by Illinois with 90, and the host, Northwestern in third with 65. Currently, Columbia sits in 26th place among the 59 teams at the event, with 14 points.
The second day of action for White and Ryan is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. local time, from Welsh-Ryan Arena.
