NEW YORK – Three members of the Class of 2015 – Ashok Narayana, Max Schnur and Bert Vancura - have been named tri-captains for the 2014-15 Columbia men's tennis team The Columbia Tennis Alumni and Friends Head Coach of Men's Tennis Bid Goswami announced this afternoon.
“Winston was a captain in his sophomore year, Ashok last year and now Max and Bert to round out the four of them,” said Goswami. “That takes care of the greatest generation of Columbia tennis players, which I call this senior class. I know these three will raise the bar and will leave footprints on the sands of time for others to follow. I am excited for them and for our team.”
Narayana resumes his leadership role, which he gained last season, for his final year in Columbia Blue. A two-time All-Ivy League singles second team selection; Narayana boasts a 65-30 overall record throughout his career with the Lions. Last season, the Houston, Texas, native posted a 14-3 dual match record splitting time at spots two through four.
On the doubles court, Narayana has partnered with classmate and now fellow captain Schnur throughout the past three campaigns. Over the course of their careers the pair has made a name for themselves as three-time All-Ivy League doubles first team selections including a unanimous selection in 2012. A year ago, the tandem made Columbia history when they captured the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, the first national championship in the Columbia men's tennis history. For the crown, Narayana and Schnur, who finished last season ranked No. 18 in the ITA, were honored with spots on the 2014 ITA All-Star Team.
Schnur, a local of Richmond, Virginia, went unbeaten in conference action on the singles court in 2014 and notched a 12-5 dual meet singles record. In three years at Columbia, Schnur has earned a 45-22 record in singles matches.
Vancura rounds out the captain trifecta. He has been a staple in the Lions line-up since his first-year campaign and holds a 58-26 overall singles record. Vancura, who calls New Hyde Park, New York, home, helped the Lions make its historical Sweet Sixteen run in the NCAA Championships with an 18-6 singles mark primarily at the fifth position.
The Lions fall campaign gets underway this weekend as Columbia travels to Princeton, New Jersey for the Ivy Plus Invitational.
