
No. 8 Stanford & No. 16 Middlebury On Tap For Women's Squash

NEW YORK – This weekend, the No. 9 Columbia women's squash team (4-3) will take on another pair of top-20 opponents as they step out of Ivy League play. In back-to-back days at Yale University, the Lions will take on No. 8 Stanford on Friday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m. and No. 16 Middlebury on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Lions are coming off a tough three matches in as many days weekend that capped with its first Ivy League win of the season. On last Friday and Saturday, Columbia suffered 0-9 losses to top-five opponents No. 2 Trinity and No. 4 Yale. On its home courts of the SL Green StreetSquash Center, the Lions bounce back on Sunday for a dominating 8-1 victory over No. 11 Brown.
The Lions saw four players sweep their opponents against Brown, including Colette Sultana at the #1 position (11-6, 11-5, 11-7), Maya Patel at #3 (11-9, 13-11, 11-8), Reyna Pacheco at #4 (11-8, 11-4, 11-6) and Addie Fulton at #7 (11-7, 11-9, 11-7). Columbia improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the win.
INSIDE THE SERIES: Columbia and Stanford will compete for the first time in program history on Friday afternoon.
Saturday marks sixth time the Lions will face Middlebury in five seasons. These two teams last met twice in the 2012-13 season, including a regular season and post-season matchup. In its final match of the season, Columbia won matches #5 - #9 on the ladder to defeat Middlebury at the 2013 College Squash Association National Team Championships. With the win, Columbia earned a final national ranking of No. 11 and revenge from a 6-3 loss to Middlebury earlier during the year.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS: Following back-to-back losses, No. 8 Stanford is 3-3 overall on the season. The Cardinals will face its third Ivy League opponent in Columbia on Friday and are winless against teams in the Ancient Eight, including defeats to No. 6 Cornell and No. 1 Penn.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS: No. 16 Middlebury are 6-1 heading into the weekend, behind a current streak of four straight victories. Middlebury has put together dominating wins over No. 19 Bowdin, Colby, Mount Holyoke and Tufts, with their sole loss handed to them by No. 2 Trinity.
