BUFFALO, N.Y. - Columbia improved to 1-1 in dual matches after a 27-9 defeat of Buffalo, in the first half of a weekend road trip upstate. The Lions won eight of ten matches in the dual, including the final seven, on the way to victory.
Johnson Mai helped Columbia to a 3-0 lead after a comeback victory in the first match of the night at 125. After trailing 5-2, the junior scored five points in the third period to earn a 7-5 win.
Already a winner against Justin Cooksey in the New York State Championships, Connor Sutton faced the Buffalo 149-pounder again tonight. Cooksey put up a fight, but a third round escape and riding time gave a 2-0 victory to the Columbia junior.
Markus Scheidel, who has not seen the mats since early December, was back tonight to take on Alex Smythe at 157. Scheidel was dominant from the beginning, scoring two take-downs in the first period. The sophomore allowed three escapes, but came away with an 8-3 win.
At 165, Tyrel White was able to hold of Rrok Ndokaj, 4-3, improving his record to 14-9 on the season.
In the 174-pound match, Muhamad McBryde of Buffalo took on Shane Hughes in one of the most exciting matches of the night. After a lengthy review of a Hughes takedown, the Columbia tri-captain got McBryde on his back, earning a second-round fall. The win increased Columbia's 12-10 advantage to 18-9, with the Hughes fall counting for six points, and the Bulls being docked a point for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Zack Hernandez and Matt Idelson had bounce-back matches at 184 and 197, both earning victories. Garrett Ryan rounded out the Lions night with a 6-0 decision, giving Columbia a 27-9 win.
Next up, the Lions will travel to Binghamton for a 2:00 p.m. dual against the Bearcats.
