LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell Bison took seven of ten matches from the Columbia wrestling team, en route to a 29-12 victory in an EIWA dual. The Lions won three straight bouts from 157-174, but were unable to pick up any more victories from the No. 23 team in the country.
Bucknell won the first four matches of the night, jumping out to a 16-0 lead. Markus Scheidel helped turn the tide for Columbia, earning a 7-4 win over Rustin Barrick at 157.
In the following match at 165, Tyrel White came out on top over Rob Schlitt in a 5-2 decision. The win helped the Lions to creep back into the contest, with Columbia then trailing 16-6.
The Lions came even closer after a big victory by Shane Hughes at 174. The senior tri-captain was dominant against Brennan McAllister, earning a second round fall at 4:36, and turning what was a 16-0 Bucknell lead into a much slimmer 16-12 margin.
This was as close as Columbia would come however, as the Lions could not earn a win in the last three matches. Bucknell earned bonus points in two of the final three matches, preserving the 29-12 victory.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-2 on the season, and 1-2 against EIWA opponents. Columbia has a chance to get back into the win column this Sunday, when American and Hofstra come to Levien Gymnasium for a tri-dual. The Lions will take on the Eagles at 1 p.m. and the Pride at 5 p.m.
