NEW YORK - The Columbia wrestling team won eight of ten matches on their way to a 27-7 victory over Hofstra at Levien Gymnasium. With the win, Columbia improves to 4-2 on the season, and 3-2 against EIWA opponents.
The Lions started off hot, coming off of a 23-16 victory against American earlier in the afternoon. The streak continued, as Johnson Mai and Angelo Amenta made it 6-0 after wins at 125 and 133.
American earned back-to-back victories at 141 and 149 to take a 7-6 lead, but would not score again throughout the dual. Markus Scheidel got by Jahlani Callender, 5-3, at 157, before Tyrel White earned an overtime victory over Nick Terdick. White tied things up with Terdick thanks to a takedown in the third, forcing the extra period. The Columbia first-year took down Hofstra's 165-pounder less than 30 seconds into the overtime, earning the 7-5 win.
With White putting Columbia up 12-7, Shane Hughes kept things rolling with a second round pin on Frank Affronti at 174. The win by fall for Hughes was his third in a row, after pinning Bucknell's Brenan McAllister and American's Nick Carey previously this weekend. Hughes also improved to 11-7 on the season with his fifth straight win.
After suffering a loss in the first match of the day, Zack Hernandez bounced back to earn a victory over Michael Oxley, 6-0. In the last two bouts of the evening, Matt Idelson and Garrett Ryan picked up their second wins of the afternoon to give Columbia the 27-7 win.
