
Fencing Concludes Regular Season With Unbeaten Performance at Historical Meet

NEW YORK - Fresh off 2015 Ivy League titles, the Columbia fencing program closed its regular season at the Historical Meet at NYU Monday night as both the men's and women's teams went 3-0. The top-ranked women squad finished the season 25-1, while the second-ranked men's team logged a 18-6 record to close their year.
Columbia started things off versus Sacred Heart. The women's team posted a 17-10 win, while the Lions men went bout-for-bout with the Pioners and came out on top, 14-13. The women had mixed weapon results, but the epeeists highlighted the match with a 7-2 performance. Amy Tong went unbeaten, 3-0, while Vivian Rand and Audrey Yun tallied 2-1 records, respectively. Columbia took the women's foil 6-3 behind undefeated performances from Jessie Laffey and Sara Taffel, but dropped the sabre, 4-5. The men on the other hand notched a 7-2 mark in the saber with Riezni Gokea and Elijah Granet going 3-0, but dropped the epee (4-5) and foil (3-6).
In the second round, Columbia posted convincing victories over Vassar. The women downed the Brewers, 24-3, and the men notched an 18-9 triumph. The women took each of the weapons by identical 8-1 scores. John Avendano, Adam Mathieu and James Sands combined for a 9-0 ledger in the foil to pace the men's match with the Brewers. The men also captured the sabre, 5-4, but fell in the epee by a 4-5 decision.
The Lions closed their regular season with each squad notching 19-8 wins against the host, NYU. The men defeated the Violets in each weapon with the saber team's 7-2 mark leading the way while the epee and foil squads both went 6-3. The women excelled in the epee (8-1) and saber (7-2), but fell in the foil (4-5).
With the regular season concluded, the Lions seek to qualify the maximum of 12 entrants to the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Qualifier, slated for Sunday, March 8.
