CHICAGO – After a weekend full of stiff competition, the No. 15 Columbia men's tennis team could not build momentum off the doubles point as the Lions' singles slipped to No. 9 Texas, 4-1, at the ITA Men's Team National Indoor Championship back draw Sunday afternoon.
For the second time in as many days Columbia (3-2) captured the doubles point. On courts one and three the matches went quickly. In the first position, No. 12 Max Schnur and Ashok Narayana fell to Soren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool, 6-2. Bert Vancura and Dragos Ignat notched a 6-4 victory over Michael Richemann and Adrian Ortiz in the third slot to keep the doubles point at large.
With the point on the line, Mike Vermeer and Winston Lin trailed George Goldhoff and Adrien Berkowicz 4-3 on the second court. The junior-senior partnership took the match point-by-point and even things at 4. The flip-flop trend continued for the remainder of the match as the Lions forced things into a tiebreaker. Vermeer and Lin excelled in the extra session to take the match 7-6 and put Columbia on the scoreboard first.
The Longhorns (9-1) showed poised in singles and cruised to three straight victories to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
No. 76 Ignat fell on the second court to Glasspool, 6-0, 6-4, before the Lions' ace No. 13 Lin dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to No. 16 Hess-Olesen. Not long after, Schnur was defeated by No. 65 Berkowicz, 6-2, 6-3.
With match-point set up, Columbia kept digging and forced a third set on courts four through six. The fight would not be enough, however, as Vancura could not hold on against Goldhoff, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and Texas claimed the 4-1 victory.
Columbia opens its home schedule with the first of three straight home matches Saturday, Feb. 21 versus its New York City rival St. John's at 1:30 p.m.
