ST. LOUIS - Day one is in the books at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships, with three Columbia wrestlers having completed their opening matches. Markus Scheidel is still alive with an overtime victory, while Garrett Ryan and Tyrel White dropped two matches on the day.
Day two gets under way at noon on Friday, and features the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, as well as wrestlebacks in two sessions. Paid attendance for the first two sessions at the Scottrade Center was 36,797.
L, 13-4 to No. 4 James Green (Nebraska)
W, 3-1 (SV-1) over Anthony Perotti (Rutgers)
After earning an automatic bid with a seventh place finish at the EIWA Championships, Scheidel was not given an easy draw in his first match. The Columbia sophomore went up against No. 4 James Green of Nebraska, a third place finisher at the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Scheidel started strong, trailing 4-2 at the end of the first period. The 157-pounder for the Huskers was able to pull away in the end, earning a major decision over Scheidel, 13-4.
In his next match, a tough battle with Anthony Perotti of Rutgers, Scheidel got the better of an unfamiliar opponent with a 3-1 sudden victory win.
With the win, tomorrow Scheidel will face No. 14 Chad Walsh (Rider), who dropped an 11-3 match to No. 3 Dylan Nees (Minnesota).
L, 3-2 to Mike England (Missouri)
L, 4-2 to Connor Brennan (Rider)
Columbia's 165-pounder opened the match with a tough opponent, as White had to battle Mike England of Missouri. The Tigers came into the NCAAs having qualified all ten of their wrestlers into the Championships, as the No. 1 team in the country.
White got off to a fast start, when a single-leg resulted in a takedown and two points. England would battle back, earning a takedown of his own in the second, and starting on top in the third. With the score tied 2-2 going into the final period, England was able to ride out White and earn one additional point to take the 3-2 win.
White's second bout of the day came against Rider's Connor Brennan (13-7) in session two. In another tight match, Brannan was able to get by White, 4-2, ending his run at the 2015 NCAAs. With the loss, White drops to 24-16 in his rookie campaign, having earned the most victories by a Lion this season.
L, 6-2 to No. 4 Michael Kroells (Minnesota)
L, 4-2 to David Ng (Harvard)
Much like White, Ryan was off to a fast start in his heavyweight bout with Minnesota's Michael Kroells. The first-year took down Kroells 15 seconds into the start of the match, almost putting the No. 9 heavyweight on his back in the process.
Kroells would earn a reversal in the first, then add four more points to top Ryan, 6-2. With the loss, Ryan was paired up with a very familiar opponent in David Ng of Harvard (19-13). The two Ivy League heavyweights split matches at the EIWA Championships, with Ryan having topped Ng in dual action at Harvard.
This time around, Ng improved to 2-2 on the season against Ryan with a 4-2 decision. With the loss, Ryan ends his season at 22-16, posting the second most wins in 2014-15 for Columbia.
