COLUMBUS, Ohio – The men's rounds of competition at the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships at the French Field House came to a close Friday morning and the Columbia men did what they had to as they accumulated 81 points over the two days to put the Lions in second place.
The top-ranked Lions men sit just three points behind leader Ohio State who combined for 84 points. Penn State (80) and Penn (77) sit third and fourth, respectively, while Princeton's scoring indicator of plus-55 puts the Tigers in fifth despite tying St. John's with wins, 70.
Four of Columbia's six student-athletes garnered All-American honors, tying last year's total.
The Lions' epeeist led the way as Jake Hoyle and Brian Ro picked up first team accolades. Hoyle maintained his first-place standing after day one and finished the 23-bout round with a 19-5 record, good for first. Ro put together a 15-8 ledger to claim the last spot in the weapon's final four. As the first and fourth seed, Hoyle and Ro will meet in the semifinal for the individual epee crown. Hoyle earned All-America status for the first time in his career, while Ro picked up his third honor and first on the first-team.
Harry Bergman was one finish place shy of the chance to fence for the individual men's foil title as he finished in fifth thanks to a 15-8 performance. Bergman's second team All-America status is the first of the junior's career. Adam Mathieu ended his post season as an honorable mention All-American for the first time in his career as the junior finished in 12th at 11-12.
Junior Geoffrey Loss wrapped up the tournament in 14th place in the men's sabre, while Will Spear closed his collegiate career in 17th.
Hoyle's and Ro's post season run will continue as the duo fence for individual titles. The women's portion of the national championship commences tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
