NEW YORK – The 15th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team closed its three-match homestand perfect as it won its third straight match with a clean sheet over Monmouth Saturday afternoon at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
Ashok Narayana and Eric Jacobs fell to Alejandro Gomez Estrada and Ramy Bekheit, 8-5, on the third court, before Columbia did what it has for five-straight matches, win the doubles point. Dragos Ignat and Bert Vancura downed Vidit Vaghela and Christian Vieria, 8-4, in the second slot. The 58th-ranked pair in the nation kept put Columbia on the board as Mike Vermeer and Winston Lin kept their record perfect with a 8-7 victory over Victor Pugliese and Przemyslaw Filipek, on the first court.
The Lions rolled in singles to blank the Hawks. No. 76 Ignat finished first on court 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Filipek. Lin finished on Ignat's heels, as the 13th-ranked senior defeated Pugliese by an identical score.
With the top two singles courts finished, Shawn Hadavi and Daniel Morgan closed the competition on the bottom two. Hadavi bested Vidit Vaghela, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5, to seal the Lions sixth victory of the season. In his first dual match of the season, Morgan defeated Vieria, 6-1, 6-3, in the sixth slot.
With the match already clinched for Columbia, Vancura posted a 6-3, 6-4, victory against Bee Kuntonomkithleu at No. 4. Vermeer closed the match with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, triumph on the third court versus Gomez Estrada.
Columbia heads out on the road for a match at Northwestern Saturday, March 14. First serve is slated for 12 p.m.
