
Outright Champs! No. 23 Men's Tennis Sweeps Penn, 7-0, For Second Straight Ivy League Title

NEW YORK - The 23rd-ranked Columbia men's tennis team completed its second straight perfect Ivy League season en route to capturing its 12th conference championship with a 7-0 win over Penn Sunday afternoon at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
Columbia (14-5, 7-0 Ivy League) grabbed the outright title for the second time in as many years and 10th time in program history. The Lions are back-to-back champions for the first time since hoisting the Albie Collins Trophy following the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. The win not only sealed Columbia's champion status, but helped the program to its sixth undefeated home season with a 7-0 home record this season and 23rd consecutive victory in the friendly confines of the tennis center. The triumph also extended the Lions Ancient Eight win-streak to 18 straight dating back to April 3, 2013.
The Lions kept its Ivy League doubles record perfect as it secured its seventh straight and 14th overall doubles point of the season as it took decisions at No. 2 followed by No. 3. In the second slot, Ashok Narayana and Dragos Ignat downed Nicholai Westergaard and Matt Nardella, 6-1, to put Columbia on the verge of the match's first point.
Columbia's No. 3 pair of Max Schnur and Bert Vancura sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Austin Kaplan and Blaine Willenborg.
Mike Vermeer accounted for the Lions second point, winning a two-set match versus Nardella at No. 4. The junior kept his career Ancient Eight record perfect, improving to 11-0 overall against Ivy League opponents with a 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Winston Lin, who ranks 18th in the nation, increased Columbia's lead to 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-3 win versus Jeremy Court at No. 1, as the senior completed his Ivy League career 19-5 overall at the top of the lineup.
Shawn Hadavi was the clinching point for the Lions, rolling to a 6-2, 7-5 victory on the fifth court over Westergaard.
Vancura, Ignat and Narayana each followed with wins as Columbia did not allow a point to Penn (14-10, 0-7 Ivy League) on the afternoon, marking the Lions' fifth clean sheet of the season.
Prior to the first serve, Columbia honored the playing careers of its five graduating seniors; Eric Jacobs, Lin, Narayana, Schnur and Vancrua. These five Lions will go down in the program's history books as one of the most decorated graduating classes in its history. Over their tenure the Class of 015 helped Columbia to a 69-19 overall record, a 24-4 mark against Ancient Eight opponents, a 31-1 mark at home, two Ivy League titles, three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including a program-best Sweet Sixteen run in 2014, the highest ITA Ranking and the program's first appearance in the ITA Team National Indoor Championships in two decades.
Columbia's next action will be in the NCAA Tournament, where it will be making its second appearance in as many years. The selection show will take place Tuesday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m.
