NEW YORK – Seniors Winston Lin of men's tennis, Ramit Tandon of men's squash and Nadia Eke of women's track & field were each presented the Connie S. Maniatty Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Awards to highlight the 94th edition of the Varsity C Celebration: Saluting our Student-Athletes at Levien Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Eke is a three-time All-American in the triple jump and has seven Ivy League Championships under her belt. Last weekend at the Penn Relays, Eke set a new Ivy League outdoor record with an attempt of 13.39 meters. She also holds Columbia's indoor record.
Lin and Tandon shared the award after similarly phenomenal careers.
Lin has earned All-Ivy League honors the past three seasons, including Rookie of the Year in 2012 and Player of the Year in 2014. With Lin playing in the No. 1 singles position, the men's tennis team has won back-to-back Ivy League Championships, going a combined 14-0. He boasts an all-time singles record of 111-31 and was ranked as high as No. 8 by the ITA.
Tandon is a four-time All-American and was given the Skillman Award, the highest honor in college squash given annually to a senior men's squash player who has demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship during his entire college career. Tandon went a combined 59-7 career and earned first team All-Ivy League honors during his four-year career.
Columbia Athletics also unveiled a brand new award, the William V. Campbell Athlete of the Year. The award will be given to one male and one female student-athlete who demonstrates superior athletic ability during the academic year. The inaugural recipients were fencing's Jake Hoyle and Margaret Lu.
Hoyle won the NCAA Individual Epee Championship, becoming Columbia's first epeeist to win a national title since 1993. Hoyle, who also took silver at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, posted a 70-25 record and helped the Lions capture the NCAA Combined Team Championship and the men's squad repeat as Ivy League Champions.
Lu was the runner-up in the women's foil at the NCAA Championships and took gold at the NCAA Northeast Regionals last winter. She went 17-1 at the Ivy League Round Robins, helping the women's team secure its ninth conference title. On the year, Lu went 86-9 and was a first team All-Ivy League selection.
The event, which honors all Columbia student-athletes, also featured the presentation of the Athletics Alumni Award to Joseph Simone '79CC.
The watch award presentations for the Columbia senior student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade-point averages and at least two varsity letters. Suzy Freeman (fencing) earned the Marion R. Philips Watch and Bert Vancura (tennis) earned the Dwight D. Eisenhower watch.
In addition, the seventh annual Lions Cup was awarded to the women's fencing team. The Lions Cup is a competitive event for all Columbia University varsity sports programs that is a means by which student-athletes can compete on behalf of their teams for points in various categories.
The men's squash team earned the Paul E. Fernandes Community Service Award, given to the varsity sports program achieving the most significant contributions and notable service to the University and local communities during an academic year.
