CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Columbia men's tennis team's Ivy League ledger remained perfect Sunday afternoon as the 28th-ranked Lions took down No. 36 Harvard, 5-2, at the Murr Tennis Center.
Now 3-0 in Ancient Eight action this season, Columbia (10-5) has won 14 straight contents against the Ivies dating back to 2013. With the setback, the Crimson dropped to 15-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
The guests got off to a bit of a shaky start in doubles action, but managed to right the ship on the second and third courts en route to a third consecutive double point and 10th this season. After No. 50 Mike Vermeer and Winston Lin fell to No. 15 Denis Nguyen and Brian Yeung on the first court, Dragos Ignat and Ashok Narayana picked up a 6-3 victory over Sebastian Beltrame and Nicky Hu in the second slot. Bert Vancura and Max Schnur battled through a lengthly opening game, but picked up multiple breaks to secure the doubles point with a 6-3 final versus Alex Steinroeder and Kelvin Lam.
Columbia, who won the first set on each of the six courts, took the first two flights to take a 3-0 lead on the day. No. 21 Lin lead the way as the Lions senior captain was the lone victor to pull out a win in straight sets. He battled Nguyen point-for-point and took down the 38th-ranked singles racquet, 7-5, 6-3. In the second slot, No. 105 Ignat took the first set, 7-6(1) against No. 120 Hu. Hu bounced back in the second set, 6-2, but Ignat retaliated with an identical score in the third to take the match.
Shawn Hadavi halted Yeung's 10-match singles win streak with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, triumph on court four to put the match away for Columbia.
Vermeer also picked up a win in Cambridge, as the junior bested Steinroeder, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 5.
Columbia returns to the Big Apple next weekend for matches versus Yale and Brown. The Lions host the Bulldogs Saturday, April 11, and the Bears Sunday, April 12. Both Ancient Eight contests are scheduled for 1 p.m.
