CANBERRA, Australia - Former four time All-Ivy League selection Max Schnur '15CC has made the quarterfinal round of doubles play in the $75,000 Canberra ATP Challenger in Australia.
Playing alongside former Brown '04 standout James Cerretani, the doubles team was able to knock off Aussie's Kody Pearson and Alexi Popyrin, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to a match with No. 1 seeds, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Santiago Gonzalez. The Tuesday match against Fystenberg/Gonzalez will be streamed live on the ATP World Tour website.
Schnur has been able to carryover a successful college career into a professional one, winning five ITF Futures Tournaments, and boasting a 39-13 record in the ITF Pro Circuit. His current doubles ranking of 354 is the highest ranked ATP player among all 2015 college graduates.
Schnur's college teammate and two-time All-American Winston Lin is also making his way through the professional ranks. Lin is currently the No. 842 player in the ATP singles field, which makes him the ninth highest ranked college player among 2015 graduates.
"Our entire program is happy for both Max and Winston," said Associate Head Coach Howard Endelman. "They are proving that high-level tennis student-athletes can come to Columbia, embrace one of the best undergraduate educations in the world, and still improve enough to play professional tennis upon graduation. It is so fun to follow these guys."
Columbia's men's tennis team is coming off its best stretch in program history, reaching the Sweet 16 while capturing Ivy League titles in 2014 and 2015. The Lions came in at No. 18 in the first preseason rankings last week, and will start the season at home on Saturday, Jan 23 against No. 23 Minnesota in the ITA Kick-Off Classic at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
