NEW YORK - In the first of three weekend duals, the Columbia wrestling team won five of the last six matches to come from behind and top Buffalo, 18-15, in the University Gymnasium. With the win, the Lions improve to 3-1 on dual matches this season, with Binghamton and Brown on deck this weekend.
With the match tied 15-15 going into the heavyweight bout, Garrett Ryan was able to come away with an 8-4 win, clinching the team victory. Ryan set the tone early with a takedown in the first period, and made it tough on Buffalo's Jake Gunning throughout the match.
Markus Scheidel started the run for the Lions, when the junior defeated Tim Schaefer by a 10-4 decision in the 157 pound bout, moving what was a 12-3 match score to 12-6.
Tyrel White needed one escape and riding time to win the next match, a 2-1 decision over Rrok Ndokai at 165, which slid the Bulls' lead to three. The team score was then tied after Zack Hernandez defended his home Blue Gym with a 4-0 decision over Muhammad McBryde at 174.
At 184, Mike Fetchet and Joe Ariola went back and forth the entire seven minutes, with the Columbia junior edging Ariola, 8-6. With the score tied after the 197 pound match, Ryan held on for the 8-4 win to give the team its third dual victory of the season.
Angelo Amenta was also victorious on the day, when a four-point nearfall helped the senior tri-captain to a 4-1 win in the 133-pound match.
Up next, Binghamton will enter the Blue Gym at 7 pm in a match which will also be broadcasted on the Ivy League Digital Network.
