Lions Pick Up a Pair of Wins at the Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH - After dropping its opening dual of the season against No. 15 North Carolina, the Columbia wrestling team topped Frankling & Marshall and Bloomsburg to go 2-1 at today's Pitt Duals.
Angelo Amenta, Markus Scheidel and Garrett Ryan all went 3-0 on the day, helping the Lions to the pair of wins.
Against the Tar Heels, Britain Carter and Amenta got Columbia out to a 6-0 start after wins in the 125 and 133-pound matches. The 15th ranked team in the country picked up wins at 141 and 149 before Scheidel came through with an 8-4 win himself over Robert Henderson. UNC would go on another streak, before Ryan got by Cory Daniel, 2-1, in the final bout of the match, as the Lions fell, 24-12.
After trailing Franklin & Marshall 9-3 with three matches complete, the Lions rattled off five consecutive wins in the middle weights, including major decisions from Scheidel and Mike Fetchet, as well as a pin from Zack Hernandez. With the bonus points, Columbia coasted to a 27-15 win over their EIWA rival.
In the final match of the day, the Lions won eight of 10 matches against Bloomsburg to take home a 35-9 win. Tyrel White won in a first round pin while Fetchet gave Columbia four points with a 10-2 major decision.
The 2-1 Lions will be showcased at home for the first time this season next weekend, with an 11 am match against Buffalo and a 7 pm dual with Binghamton on Saturday, Jan. 16, followed by a 1 pm dual against Brown on Sunday, Jan. 17. All three matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
