ROUND THREE RESULTS: Columbia vs. Vassar
NEW YORK - For the fifth-consecutive year, the Irving Martin Preschel Memorial Award will remain in Morningside Heights as the Columbia fencing team took down NYU to open up the Historical Meet on Wednesday evening.
Dedicated to Irving Martin Preschel, a former manager and member of the NYU fencing team who was killed in action at Heidelberg, Germany on March 30, 1945, the Irving Martin Preschel Memorial Award is presented annually to the winner of the match between Columbia and NYU. The trophy dates back to the 1945-46 season where NYU took the award in six of the first seven years. Since then, Columbia has won 40 times prior to Wednesday night's meeting and can now celebrate a 41st time.
The women's team opened the day with a strong 20-7 victory over the Violets thanks to an impressive 8-1 win by the sabre team. The men's side was not as easy to secure the victory, but a late 7-2 surge by the epee team helped push the Lions past NYU, 15-12, to seal the sweep and allow Columbia to retain the trophy.
Prior to the start of the evening, the Lions also honored the team's 11 graduating seniors as they set forth in their final bouts inside the Dodge Physical Fitness Center.
MEN'S RECAP
The men's team found itself in an early battle with NYU, falling to the Violets, 4-5, in both sabre and foil, but with the help of a 3-0 sweep by Angad Singh and a pair of 2-1 wins by Jarett Poliner and Brian Ro, the epeeists were able to help the Lions come back and take the 15-12 victory. James Sands had a strong performance in the opening round as well in men's foil, taking down all three opponents to earn three of the team's four points.
The Lions quickly turned things around in round two, however, dominating Sacred Heart to seal a 22-5 win over the Pioneers. Maciej Biernacki and Brian Ro each went a perfect 3-0 to help lead their respective squads to a 7-2 victory while Harry Bergman and James Sands both swept to lead foil to an 8-1 win.
With the spirit of the senior send-off in full effect, the Lions allowed the team's graduating seniors to take to the strip in a weapon other than their own for the final round of action as Jake Hoyle (epee), Harry Bergman (foil) and Brian Ro (epee) each took their turn at sabre while Adam Mathieu (foil) and Geoffrey Loss (sabre) gave their effort in epee.
After falling to take the point in his first two efforts on the strip, Hoyle was able to come back in his final bout of the evening and claim a 5-4 decision for his first win in men's sabre. Despite a loss in each of their first bouts, Mathieu and Loss were able to get the hang of men's epee as they finished the final round with a 1-2 and 2-1 record, respectively.
WOMEN'S RECAP
The women's team came out attacking early on, posting up four sweeps in the opening round by Sarah Yee, Ilana Solomon, Quinn Crum and Amy Tong, before sealing a 20-7 victory. While the foil and epee teams each took a 6-3 win, it was the sabre team that truly shined with a dominating 8-1 victory over the Violets.
That momentum continued for the Lions as they quickly took a dominating 23-4 win from Sacred Heart in round two. The round opened with an impressive 9-0 sweep by the foil trio of Jessie Laffey, Iman Blow and Quinn Crum who combined together for a touch differential of 45-10. Thanks to a 6-3 win in sabre behind a 3-0 sweep by Ilana Solomon, the Lions were able to extend their lead before the epee squad could seal the deal with an 8-1 victory over the Pioneers.
The women's team continued to dominate all the way through the final round on the strip as both the sabre and foil squads claimed an 8-1 victory before a 6-3 epee win sealed a 22-5 victory over Vassar to round out the afternoon.
