2016 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP SELECTIONS
NEW YORK – Coming off a strong performance at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday, the defending NCAA Champion Columbia fencing team will be able to send the maximum 12 fencers to the field of 144 at the 2016 NCAA Championships on March 24-27. Columbia is one of only four teams to qualify the maximum 12, joining Notre Dame, Princeton and St. John's.
This marks the second time in as many years that the Lions are able to send the maximum competitors to the Championship, two representatives in each weapon on both the men's and women's side, to help the Lions move into a strong position to defend their NCAA Championship title. Prior to last year, the Lions had not qualified the maximum 12 fencers since 2008.
ABOUT THE NCAA FENCING CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2016 NCAA Fencing Championships will take place at Brandeis University at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center in Waltham, Massachusetts on March 24-27.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
A live feed of the semifinal and final bouts will be available on ESPN3 or via the WatchESPN app. The semifinals and finals, along with other championship highlights, will also air on ESPNU at 2:30 p.m. ET on April 6.
A full preview of Columbia's quest to defend their NCAA Championship title, along with a breakdown of each of the 12 competitors for the Lions, will be available next week on GoColumbiaLions.com.
