INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore heavyweight Garrett Ryan will join teammates Markus Scheidel and Tyrel White at the NCAA Wrestling Championships next week at Madison Square Garden after earning an at-large bid, announced today by the NCAA.
Ryan was one of 49 at-large selections made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee, which uses a number of criteria such as RPI, coaches ranking, and winning percentage. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native went 22-8 during his sophomore campaign, helping Columbia close out a number of dual matches with wins.
The 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships will mark the second straight season in which Ryan earned an at-large bid, as the heavyweight ended his rookie year at 22-12, while becoming the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Scheidel earned an automatic bid at 157 when he took third and White did the same at 165 when he took fourth at the EIWA Championships. On the season, Scheidel's 39 wins lead the entire field of 330 qualifiers for the NCAAs. For White, a 25-9 record helped the sophomore to eclipse the 24 wins he eclipsed during his NCAA qualifying rookie season.
Day one of the 2016 NCAA D-I Wrestling Championships will get under way at noon on Thursday, March 17.
