
Lions Hold Their Own Against Nation's Best

Queens, NY— The top teams in the nation clashed in Queens today as the Columbia women's team went 4-1 and the men went 1-4 on the day.
Both squads return to action tomorrow at the Penn Invitational.
WOMEN'S RECAP (4-1)
Columbia women's fencing dropped its first match of the day to Notre Dame 14-13, but rebounded to beat Harvard 17-10 in the second match. Sylvie Binder and Giana Vierheller both went 6-0 in the first two rounds. Women's epee stole the show against the Crimson as the squad went 8-1.
Epee dominance continued against Ohio State, as the women went 8-1 and the Lions got the victory over the Buckeyes, 18-9. Newcomer Anne Cebula won all three of her bouts in the victory.
Against Penn State, the foil squad shined. The trio of Iman Blow, Binder and Ester Schreiber blanked the Nittany Lions 9-0, epee finished 6-3 and the Lions got the win - 18-9.

The Lions rounded out the day with a 20-7 win over St. John's. Foil posted another clean sweep with Blow, Schreiber and Quinn Crum. Violet Michel also won all three bouts.
MEN'S RECAP (1-4)
Columbia men's fencing came out firing in Queens, as the squad defeated Notre Dame 14-13 in the first match of the day. Men's foil led the charge as the squad went 8-1 against the Fighting Irish. With Columbia needing one more bout to clinch the match, Sidarth Kumbla defeated Axel Kiefer 5-3 to seal the Lion victory. Kumbla and Nolen Scruggs both went 3-0.

The second match of the day didn't go Columbia's way, as the Lions fell to Harvard 14-13. Kumbla continued his hot streak with a 6-0 start in the first two matches, and Porter Hesslegrave improved to 5-1 with a 3-0 of Harvard.
The men's team struggled against Ohio State, falling to the Buckeyes 18-9 and dropped a close one to St. John's in the final match of the day 14-13.
It was an NCAA Championship rematch in men's foil between runner-up Nolen Scruggs and champion Andras Nemeth. Scruggs took the win this time.
The men's squad was short handed today as sabre fencers Josef Cohen and Dawson Sieradzky are in Phoenix at the Sabre Junior World Cup.
