Fencing names the 2018-19 captains, and prepares for first meet
NEW YORK- The Columbia fencing team is getting ready to start their 2018-19 season. Coach Michael Aufrichtig welcomes in seven new captains to lead the squad this season. For the women, Elise Gout, Giana Vierheller, Quinn Crum and Ilana Solomon will represent the women, while Jarett Poliner, Nolen Scruggs, and Calvin Liang will represent the men
"Our captains all have the traits that help lead teams to greatness," Aufrichtig said. "I am extremely optimistic in watching their unselfish commitment to our fencing family with a team first philosophy this preseason. Looking forward to the season ahead."
Gout is coming off of a successful season, marking a 4-2 record at the Historical Meet last year. Vierheller, a junior, finished the 2017-18 season with a 13th place finish at the NCAA championships and an undefeated meet at the Philadelphia Invitational. Senior foil fencer, Crum, had an 11-0 undefeated streak at the Ivy League championships. The final captain for the women's squad, Solomon, posted a 3-0 record at the Ivy League Championships last year.
On the men's side, epee fencer Jarett Poliner found success with a 22-14 record overall, and an 8-1 record at the Penn State Invitational. Nolen Scruggs claimed an impressive 41-19 record last year fencing foil, and Calvin Liang, representing Sabre, had an 9-3 record at the Philadelphia Invitational for the 2017-18 season.
"The team consists of some of the kindest and most hardworking people I know who have dedicated an unreal amount of time and effort into perfecting their craft on and off the strip," Calvin Liang said. "This year I want to take all that I have learned in my time at Columbia as a member of this team and help my teammates push themselves to the next level."
Fencing starts off their season with the Alumni meet on campus October 21 at 10:00 a.m., then heads off to the Temple Open in Philadelphia on October 27-28.
