NEW YORK – The final home duals of the Columbia Wrestling season get under way Saturday, when the Lions host Harvard and Brown on the Ivy League Network.
A match with the Crimson starts the day at 1 p.m., before a 6 p.m. dual against the Bears.
Senior Day
Prior to the 6 p.m. dual, the Columbia wrestling program will honor 10 seniors who will take part in their final home match. The class of 2018 includes Matt Doggett, Grant Fetchet, Jacob Macalolooy, Tyler Oberg, Tyler Ponte, Andrew Psomas, Garrett Ryan, Markus Scheidel, Tyrel White, and Tyler Zimmer.
About the Lions
Columbia was one bout away from a team win twice last weekend, when the Lions faced Princeton and Penn on the road. Against the Tigers on Friday, four wins were taken by the Lions, including tech falls from White and Ryan, in addition to a major decision from Alec Kelly during the 24-17 loss. The following day at Penn, the two teams battled to a 5-5 match split, by bonus points by the Quakers in four of those five bouts led to a 21-18 win for the home team.
With a pair of bonus point victories last weekend, Ryan improved to 25-4 on the season, as he enters the weekend as the No. 15 ranked heavyweight by Intermat. Scheidel fell a few spots in the rankings to No. 17 after an overtime loss to Princeton's Mike D'Angelo, but two wins Saturday would give the 157-pounder 100 for his career. Along with Ryan, White posted a pair of bonus point wins this past weekend, and enters Saturday victorious in 10 of his last 11 matches at 19-9.
About the Crimson
In a series history that dates back to 1917, the Lions hold a 48-37-2 advantage in the all-time matchup, but the Columbia senior class holds only one win the past three years over Harvard, which came in 2015.
The Crimson enter the weekend at 4-4, having dropped three consecutive duals before beating Brown, 21-12, last weekend. Harvard fell to Cornell (35-3), Princeton (21-16), and Penn (20-18) all by similar scores to Columbia. Although the Crimson are without a ranked wrestler, Josef Johnson (22-8) is a two-time NCAA qualifier at 174, Kanon Dean enters the weekend at 19-13 in the 184-pound weight class, and AJ Jaffe has gone 19-8 at 141.
About the Bears
Columbia and Brown have also been competing against one another since 1917, with the Lions holding a 36-26-1 edge in duals. A season ago in Providence, the Lions emerged victorious during a 22-14 dual that saw Columbia post wins in seven bouts.
The Bears are also without a ranked wrestler at the moment, but have a bevy of wrestlers with double-digit wins, and a 5-6 (2-2) record on the season in duals. Justin Staudenmayer has twice qualified for the NCAA Championships at 157, and has gone 21-9 this season, while CJ LaFragola is 14-7 at 184, and heavyweight Ian Butterbrodt is 16-11.
