CLEVELAND - Three members of the Columbia wrestling team had their careers come to a close at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cleveland.
Markus Scheidel won a pair of matches while Tyrel White and Garrett Ryan each posted one victory as all three Lions participated in their fourth NCAA Championships.
White was the first of the three to see action in the tournament, as he took part in the pigtail round at 174 pounds. In a rematch of his EIWA Tournament loss to Army's Ben Harvey, White was the aggressor this time around, taking down Harvey in the second period and turning him to his back, picking up four nearfall points. After adding another point from riding time, White moved on with an 8-1 win.
The senior then faced Michigan's Myles Amine, but was unable to score against the bracket's No. 5 seed, falling 6-0. On Thursday night in the consolation bracket, the North Bomoseen, Vermont native took on Wisconsin's Ryan Christensen, dropping an 8-1 decision to end his career. White ends his four years with a 98-54 record, having three career wins at the NCAA Championships.
Scheidel was the second Lion to compete, battling Edinboro's Andrew Shomers in the first round. The No. 10 seed at 157 got off to a fast start, taking down Shomers twice in the first period. Scheidel added an escape to start the second period, and was looking at bonus points with a 6-1 lead in the second, but Shomers scored an escape and picked up a takedown of his own in the third, as Scheidel held on for a 6-3 win. In the evening bout on Thursday, Ohio State's Micah Jordan, the No. 7 seed and Big Ten Champion, turned Scheidel at the start of the second and got a pin, sending him on to the consolation bracket.
On Friday against Joe Velliquette from Penn, Scheidel was able to score bonus points in an 8-0 victory. The win meant he was paired with North Carolina's Kennedy Monday in the second bout of Session III. Scheidel led Monday 4-3 going into the third, but two takedowns helped the UNC freshman to an 8-6 win. A four-time NCAA Qualifier, Scheidel wraps up his career with a 106-34 record, including seven victories at the NCAA Championships.
In the first round of the heavyweight bracket, Ryan was paired with Arizona State's Tanner Hall. After a scoreless first period, the No. 8 seed escaped Ryan's top position, then added two points on a takedown in the third. Ryan was unable to escape and fell 4-0 after a riding time point, sending him to a consolation matchup with Utah Valley's Dustin Dennison on Thursday night.
Ryan came out fast against Dennison, scoring a pair of takedowns in the first to lead 4-1. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native added an escape and another takedown in the second en route to a 9-3 victory. In his first match on Friday, Ryan was paired with Lehigh's Jordan Wood, who recently edged him at the EIWA Championships. The Columbia senior took a 2-1 lead on a reversal in the third, but Lehigh's EIWA Champion heavyweight was able to earn a reversal of his own, knocking out Ryan with a 3-2 decision. Ryan's career record ends at 103-41, with three of those wins coming at the NCAA Championships.
Prior to the three Columbia seniors in the class of 2018, two-time All-American Matt Palmer '07CC was the only other four-time NCAA Qualifier in program history.
