NEW YORK - Columbia men's basketball's Mike Smith claimed All-Metropolitan Third Team honors to cap a strong sophomore campaign, announced Monday by the Met Basketball Writers Association
Tim Cluess of Iona was selected the All-Met Division I men's college basketball Coach of the Year, while Geo Baker of Rutgers was named Rookie of the Year. The winner of the 85th Lt. Frank J. Haggerty Award as All-Met Men's Player of the Year will be announced by the MBWA on Wednesday.
Smith, a second-team All-Ivy League pick, finished the regular season second in the conference in scoring at 17.6 points per game. He also dished out 4.6 assists per game, becoming the first Columbia player to lead the conference in the category since Brett Loscalzo '08CC did so in the 2004-05 campaign. Smith's 124 assists were also the ninth highest single-season total in program history.
The Burr Ridge, Illinois, native shot 84.2 percent from the foul line – good for fourth in the Ancient Eight and registered 1.1 steals per contest, putting him sixth in the league. Smith scored 20-plus points on 10 occasions, including a career-high 28 points against Navy on December 10.
This marks the fifth consecutive year the Lions have a landed an All-Metropolitan squad. Smith joins Maodo Lo '16CC and Brian Barbour '13, the last two Lions starting point guards, to achieve the honor.
