Columbia Wrestling sophomore Joe Manchio earned a ranking at 125 pounds in three different publications, while sophomore Matt Kazimir remained No. 19 at 141 pounds.
NEW YORK – A win over the No. 14 125-pounder in the country, along with the 125-pound title at the Roadrunner Open, has put the country on notice as Columbia Wrestling sophomore Joe Manchio's six win weekend in California has earned the Lion sophomore national rankings in three publications with the best ranking being No. 11 in the latest Trackwrestling 125-pound rankings as announced on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Manchio came in ranked No. 17 by Intermat and No. 21 by Flowrestling, which gives Manchio a 16.3 composite Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association ranking, which is fifth best among EIWA 125-pounders. At 141 pounds, sophomore Matt Kazimir, who went 5-1 over the weekend, remained at No. 19 in the latest ranking by Amateur Wrestling News.
During Columbia's weekend in California, saw the Lions face off with Stanford, then spend the day at the Roadrunner Open. While at Stanford, Manchio took down then ranked No. 14 Gabriel Townsell with a 6-3 decision, and he followed that up with five wins at the Roadrunner Open on his way to taking the title at 125 pounds.
At 125 pounds, which is one of the more competitive weight classes in the EIWA, Manchio's 16.3 composite ranking places him as the No. 5 125-pounder in the EIWA and he is joined by Patrick Glory (Princeton), Brandon Paetzell (Lehigh), Michael Colaiocco (Penn), Gage Curry (American) and Logan Treaster (Navy).
Kazimir, who won his match at Stanford and finished second at the Roadrunner Open, has been off to a strong start and within the composite rankings of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, Kazimir currently holds the second highest ranking of anyone falling under the 141-pound ranking. Along with Kazimir, Ryan Pomrinca (Lehigh), who holds the best ranking, Core Shie (Army), Anthony Sparacio (Binghamton) and Sal Profaci (American) have all earned rankings across the six publications that the EIWA considers when putting together weekly rankings for wrestlers within the EIWA.
The EIWA takes several publications into consideration when ranking wrestlers across the conference, with rankings from FloWrestling, TrackWrestling, Intermat, The Open Mat and Wrestling Insider Newsmag all being considered. Once again, Kazimir was ranked by Amateur Wrestling News alone, but his ranking is the highest gained by any of the three other 141 pounders that earned rankings by the aforementioned publications, while Manchio earned rankings by Trackwrestling, Intermat and Flowrestling.
